Obesity is now the second leading cause of preventable death in this country, surpassed only by smoking. Every month, it seems, we hear about another diet plan to help men and women lose weight. Most of these are not designed to correct the real problem of the body’s changing metabolism as people grow older nor do they address the real problem with brain chemisty created by food additives. The control of food fantasy is acheived by serotonin agents like 5 HT and Phenteramine Rxs. The control of opioid receptor stimulation by certain ratios of sugar, fat, and salt in your diet is controlled by not eating processed foods, and realizing that overeating is due to stimulation of your narcotic receptors in the brain. This is best described in a book called THE END OF OVEREATING (2009). A summary is attached.
THE END OF OVEREATING by David Kessler, MD
Basic Weight Facts
Previous to 1980, people gained a couple pounds between age 20-40, then lost a couple pounds from age 60-70
In 1960, the average weight of a 20-29 yo woman was 128; In 2000, it was 157
In 1960, the average weight of a 40-49 yo woman was 142; In 2000 it was 169
Reasons: available food, larger portion sizes, more chain restaurants, more food stores, and a eating out culture and food additives that have ADDICTIVE POWERS of the scientifically proven perfect combo of fat, sugar and salt (Food Processing meets Big Tobacco)
The Chemistry
Food stimulates the PLEASURE centers of the brain…A rat that is hungry will not cross an electrified floor to get to food, but a recently fed rat will, because PLEASURE centers are turned on and their dopamine and narcotic receptors are TURNED ON
Homeostasis in the brain is under attack by SUGAR, SALT, and FAT
Palatability of food is its capacity to stimulate appetite and EAT MORE
Sugar and Fat together(not separate) in a food is more palatable By glazing a chicken, or adding extra butter to a dish, it makes it more “hyperpalatable”
Sugar curve: beverages with 10% sugar are most palatable to humans:
Salt curve: steeper than sugar, bliss point is more defined
Study with obesity resistant and obesity prone mice: When both groups were offered high fat, AND high sugar, they gorged and gained weight; High fat by itself didn’t do it
Reward behaviour: rats will work hard to get a sucrose solution of 30% or less; 10% cornoil is max for fats, If a food has both fat and sugar, it will work even harder. The breaking point that rats will work for the combo is just under that of COCAINE!!!
Other Factors
Place of eating: conditioned on where the high fat food or high sugar food was eaten before
Quantity: one vs two scoops-animals will eat both
Concentration: adding sugar or fat will increase palatability
Variety” more sensory inputs, more palatability
Cues Activate Brain Chemistry
Activity in the brain is not only stimulated by food itself, but also by cues that food is close by. Triggering a spiked dopamine response, we are conditioned to ACT, like Pavlov’s dogs
Conditioning can happen in 5 days: people given a high fat, high sugar snack for 5 consecutive mornings wanted something sweet by the same time each am.
Driven by dopamine, these cues motivate reward seeking behavior that is basic survival
We are conditioned to expect that a CUE will follow with a reward, and because of this we release dopamine, which leads us to eat rewarding foods, which in turn stimulate the opioid receptors, which in turn stimulate further eating
Emotions make Food Memorable
MRI scans show dopaminergic response when people look at pictures that predict $$ reward
Three weeks later, participants still had sharper memory of the reward pictures over others
Reward circuits in the dopamine pathway affect long term memory
TV ads sell emotion, not nutrition
Habituation
When food is not necessary, the brain is built to release less dopamine
If the stimulus is powerful enough, novel, or administered intermittently, the brain will not curb its dopamine response, and desire remains high. This happens with drugs of abuse like cocaine. Hyperpalatable food alter the brain in the same way. Even if a high fat high sugar drink was offered daily for eight weeks, there was no habituation and dopamine levels remained high, even when the stimulus was limited to two days per week.
Key to overcoming habituation is to offer tantilizing small amts of food at a predictable time.
Goal Directed-Behavior vs Habit-Directed
Dopamine influences both types of behavior
Feed a rat sugar pellets that make them sick and the next day they avoid the sugar pellets…Feed them the sugar pellets for three weeks and then make them sick, and they don’t avoid the sugar pellets the next day because they are addicted
Food Rehab
Read Labels: List of sugars and fats is separate but if you add it all up, Kellogg’s frosted flakes has over 1/3rd of added sugar in the box
Avoid Processed Foods and Fast Food Chains:Tenderized meats, maximum fat absorption, multiple sugars and flavors, anticipation advertising,
Avoid Supersizing
Weight Loss Drugs: Increaing serotonin shuts down the action of dopamine and reduces the reward pathway release. PHENTERAMINE
Awareness:, Engage in competing behavior (avoid reflex trip by certain places, or going to refrigerator upon arriving home), formulate thoughts that compete with and serve to quiet the old ones( I cant have a bite because a bite will lead to 20), support group, let go of the past
Develop a planned response: When encountering a stimulating food, prepare rules and follow them for these situations
Limit Exposure, Remember the stakes; Direct attention elsewhere: Learn active resistance; Get out of the Path of Cues; Deal with urges, Exercise
Phenteramine for acute or chronic use is justified

Medications Used for Weight Management
Adenosine Monophosphate (AMP) - This is a natural
supplement given as an injection once or twice a week. AMP helps your
body to make more ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). ATP is what the body
uses for energy. By supplementing with AMP, a patient can improve his
or her metabolic rate and energy levels. AMP is usually mixed with a
suspension of B12 and B6, which are necessary for the break down of fat
in your body.
Appetite Suppressants - These medications work on your
central nervous system to decrease your appetite. They have been around
for many years and are very safe to take.
Lipase Inhibitors - Lipase is an enzyme produced in
your pancreas and released into your small intestines when you have a
meal. Lipase breaks down the fat in your food so that your intestines
can absorb it. Lipase is blocked by Xenical(R) so that up to 30% of the
fat in your food cannot be broken down
