What is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation is the process of removing toxic metals, such as lead and mercury, from the body. Chelation EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra aceticacid) is a synthetic amino acid which has the ability to attach itself to metals and minerals, forming a particular kind of bond called a chelate. Heavier metals such as lead have a greater affinity for EDTA and form stronger bonds.

This therapy involves the intravenous infusions of EDTA, a modified amino acid,  once or twice a week initially for 30-40 treatments.  Many people then do “maintenence” therapy to maintain their newfound health.   Under current treatment protocols, EDTA chelation therapy is safe and relatively free of side effects. Recently, 4 years of safety data of the NIH TACT trial was reviewed in 2009 and out of 48,000 IVs administered, there was no difference between placebo and treatment as far as side effects.  The data collection as to efficacy is ongoing as of 2010.

                                     Toll Free  (800) 360-EDTA (3382)

281-218-6700 Clear Lake (Houston)  429 Bay Area Blvd  77058

713-780-7019 Galleria (Houston)      1900 St James 770

We request that you fill out the required paperwork before your appointment paperwork.  Your symptoms and history will be reviewed by a healthcare provider as part of the screening process and you will receive a small IV dose of EDTA as part of our “challenge test. Then you will collect your urine for the next 6-9 hours. You will be given a kit with everything you need for the urine collection. You will then send the urine sample by Fed Ex to an outside specialty lab.

Testing for sensitivities to the various IV nutrients and EDTA will be done .  It is necessary to take extra nutritional supplements which include the following : N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) or Cerafolin NAC, a calcium/magnesium/mineral supplement, and a multiple vitamin. Once test results have been received, we will then contact your insurance to get chelation therapy.

We require during your chelation therapy that every 5-10 treatments that you have a serum creatinine lab test (kidney function test).

Each chelation therapy lasts 2.5-3 hours 2x/week for a total of 15-30 treatments.  There must be a minimum of 48 hours between treatments. Every 5-10 treatments you will need a repeat serum creatinine to check your kidney function. For insurance purposes, we repeat the urine collection every the 15th treatment to determine the next step in treatment.
